The man does not dream, for his mechanical body does not
require sleep. Because of this,
he is able to guard his master—the boy—during every moment of
their long, harsh journey.

Each morning, the boy tells the man of his dreams if he remembers
them. The man does not understand,
but he sits quietly and listens as
the innocent boy unleashes his thoughts.

Such mornings are the only moments of respite they know.
But whenever the boy asks the man of his dreams,
he cannot find the words. "If only I could dream,"
he thinks. "If only I could make him happy."

One morning, a puzzling series of
images flash through the man's mind.
He eagerly turns to tell the boy his dream,
but his companion has faded and will never smile again.
