Deep in the mountains, far from civilization, sits a lonely ruin.
It is a haunted mansion, one said to house the ghost of a woman
killed by bandits. Fearful of the ghost, none have dared set
foot in the house for an age.

In the city, a curious adventurer hears the tale of the house.
He immediately takes up his family heirloom—a spear that can put
spirits at ease—and makes for the ruin in order to grant the
ghost peace.

Days later, he returns from the ruin in high spirits. When asked,
he says only that he successfully put the woman to rest, and
people noticed that the ghost never again showed itself in the ruin.

Years later, a different ghost is sighted there. The adventurer
again readies his spear and goes to dispatch the creature,
but returns crestfallen—all he'd found was the ghost of a baby
that looked exactly like him.
