In the long, long ago, a great fire consumed a mountain that
was home to a unicorn. The poor creature had a child in her
belly, and as the flames leapt around her, she prayed that the
child might somehow be saved.

The unicorn was born as the mother burned to death—but her
prayer had been heard, and the foal was granted an odd
physicality that made him resistant to fire. Legs shaking, the
foal stood and watched as the fire consumed everything.

The foal was now alone on the desolate scorched mountain,
and it cried by its mother's side for three days and nights.
On the fourth day, a small green bud sprouted, and the foal
immediately began to love it as if it were his own mother.

A thousand years passed. The bud grew and grew, eventually
becoming the sacred tree of the mountain, while the foal slept
beneath its branches, protecting both the tree and all that
lived within it from the ravages of fire.
