Some time ago, a boy was offered up to the gods. Taken to a
dark grotto and leashed to an altar, he was intended as a
sacrifice to sooth their righteous anger.

Yet the boy did not hate his people, for he knew that his
sacrifice would allow many more to live. This was the way of
things. This was right.

In a way, he was almost looking forward to it. He alone would
know the faces of their gods, who elsewise did not deign
appear before humans—and this simple fact was enough to
satisfy him.

But the gods never came. Instead, the boy stayed tied to the
altar as his consciousness slowly slipped away. So when a
hungry beast appeared, he assumed it was a god, and a
smile spread across his face as it devoured him.
