A lone boy stood sobbing before a gate. He had hoped to
attend the land's most prestigious school of magic, but they
rejected him because he was too poor and lacked the proper
arcane equipment.

But the boy would not give up on his dream. Since he could
not purchase equipment, he snuck onto the school grounds
and found a dirty staff discarded in the trash.

Several years later, he graduated from the school at the top
of his class and was rewarded with a beautiful new staff.
He immediately tossed his old one aside and began to walk
the path of a sorcerer in both name and deed.

Sadly, however, once he discarded the old staff, he lost his
ability to perform magic—and after several fruitless years,
the once-promising sorcerer took his own life.
